Lent Journal – Day 19

“For God alone my soul waits in silence,
for my hope is from him.”    Psalm 62:5

Today I’m thinking about hope.  When the future seems terribly uncertain, when anxiety threatens to overwhelm, where is our hope?  Is it in things which do not satisfy, which do not, in the end, feed and nourish us?  As we continue to journey through Lent, may we focus on what really sustains us and redirect our gaze to the One who loves us, who is our hope.

“Hope” is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all –

And sweetest – in the Gale – is heard –
And sore must be the storm –
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm –

I’ve heard it in the chillest land –
And on the strangest Sea –
Yet – never – in Extremity,
It asked a crumb – of me.
