Lent Journal – Day 15

The Word by R. S Thomas:

A pen appeared, and the god said:
‘Write about what it is to be
Man.’  And my hand hovered
long over the bare page.

until there, like footprints
of the lost traveller, letters
took shape on the page’s
blankness, and I spelled out
the word ‘lonely’.

And my hand moved
To erase it; but the voices
Of all those waiting at life’s
Window cried out loud: ‘It’s true”.

Christians believe in a relational God; God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit.  Being made in the image of God, we are called to participate in this communal life, to reflect the mutual cooperation, the love, the giving and receiving that characterise the Trinity.  We were not created to be alone, but to live in company with one another and with God, for togetherness.  But this is not some fluffy, cuddly existence – community is not for the faint hearted.  And for many it is too painful; for others, they have found themselves on the outside, excluded.  A sense of alienation has been described as one of the main problems confronting humanity now – alienation, loneliness, isolation from one another, and from God.

Is there someone you know who would love a cup of tea and a chat, someone who would welcome a phone call, or someone to walk with? Or…you fill in the gap.
